Spiny Oyster shells are found in the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The shells are prized for their brilliant colors and are often found in Native American jewelry. Our terrific Necklace showcases a Spiny Oyster Shell Pendant by Dan Dodson, an established Santa Fe artisan. The Pendant has a Red 16x22mm Spiny Oyster Shell Oval “stone” in the center, surrounded by 14 smaller Red-Orange Ovals (6x9mm) and 21 Red Rounds (6mm). The center Stone is wrapped in a Sterling Rope and the 2nd tier Ovals are decorated with Sterling Silver Balls. All 36 Stones are in raised individual Bezels, and set on a plate of oxidized Sterling Silver. The Pendant has a large, custom Sterling Silver Bail that has been stamped and decorated with Sterling ornaments. We’ve paired the Pendant with glossy Spiny Oyster Shell Spines, matched to the center Stone in the Pendant. The Spines are graduated and range in length from 7 to 21mm. They are interspersed with Black Agate Rounds and highlighted by 13.5 and 16mm Stamped Sterling Rondelles, with patterns mirroring the detail on the Pendant Bail. The Necklace is finished with Sterling Silver Cones and Toggle Clasp and adorned with a Southwest Designs Sterling Charm. The piece weighs 127 grams and is 22-1/2 inches long, plus the Pendant. The Pendant is 3-1/4” tall by 2” wide including a 1” Bail.
